Preventive CareDental Professionals That Care About Your Overall HealthA number of studies show that gum disease has a direct impact on your overall health. In fact, it’s one of the most widespread dental issues among adults. Gingivitis and periodontitis can arise at any age. They often develop slowly and painlessly. Sometimes, symptoms don’t present themselves until the disease has progressed to the point where teeth are falling out. Luckily, gum diseases are almost always preventable, and are even reversible if they are caught early. If you feel discomfort while brushing, or if your gums are red, sensitive, or if they bleed, schedule an appointment with a dental professional right away. Our qualified dental hygienists offer treatments against gingivitis and periodontitis on a schedule that meets your needs. When it comes to preserving the tissue that supports your teeth and overall health, a custom maintenance program is essential. |

Why do my gums bleed?Dental plaque is a soft, sticky, yellow deposit that’s teeming with bacteria. It accumulates on the teeth on a daily basis. If plaque isn’t removed every day with the help of a toothbrush and dental floss, it irritates the gums, which causes them to bleed. When plaque hardens it turns into tartar, which can’t be removed with dental floss and brushing alone. Plaque and tartar cause gums to become infected. The early stages of gum disease are known as gingivitis. The gums become slightly red and may bleed when you brush them. That being said, these symptoms can be very minor, and sometimes go unnoticed. Gingivitis worsens when the bacteria starts to destroy the bone and gums that hold your teeth in place. This stage is known as periodontitis. Pockets of infection known as periodontal pockets start to form. If the disease remains untreated, the teeth will get loose and may even fall out. |
How can I prevent cavities? The bacteria in your mouth feed on sugar. They excrete acidic residue that attack the teeth. When a tooth is repeatedly exposed to these acids, a hole starts to form. This is what we call a cavity. To prevent cavities, avoid eating sweet, sticky, and acidic foods (think cookies, candy, chocolate, soft drinks, juices, granola bars, dried fruit, honey, jams, sugar in your coffee or tea, and sugary gum). Brushing and flossing can also help to remove these tooth-damaging residues. |
